Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

Osteopathy is a detailed, holistic, hands-on physical therapy for a wide range of conditions. It is a growing profession that is internationally recognised and is a scientifically based complementary medical practice. Osteopathic treatment can include soft-tissue massage, stretching, joint articulation, manipulation (if appropriate), exercise therapy and education on ergonomics, posture, exercise, breathing patterns, diet and lifestyle.

Our Osteopaths are all 5-year university educated and members of the Australian Osteopathic Association.

WHAT DO OSTEOPATH'S TREAT?

Treatments are available for:

  • Neck pain / Headaches

  • Back pain / Sciatica

  • Sports related problems

  • Pregnancy care

  • Children and babies

  • Joint pain / Arthritis

  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

HOW DOES OSTEOPATHY DIFFER FROM OTHER PROFESSIONS?

There are similarities between the professions within the physical therapy field. For us at Dapto Osteo, the fundamental factor that makes the osteopathic approach so effective is the detailed, hands-on nature of what we do. Our Osteopaths record a detailed medical history, conduct a thorough physical examination and devise a treatment and management plan to suit the individual. We try to establish and address all aspects of a given problem. These aspects may include ergonomics, breathing patterns, posture, stress, inappropriate exercise program etc.

WHY SHOULD I GO TO AN OSTEOPATH?

Osteopathy is a safe and effective approach to the treatment of pain and impaired movement. Treatment is neither invasive nor reliant on medication, but embraces a holistic approach to encourage the patient's own natural healing mechanisms. Patients find that their back pain and other problems are not only cured, but they are also given specific advice and exercises to prevent future incidents of pain and immobility.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL?

Most people don't need a referral. The only times you will need a referral are if you wish to consult an Osteopath under Medicare's Chronic Disease Management care program, the Veterans’ Affairs scheme or for WorkCover
